FGV Annual Report 2012
74 Felda Global Ventures Holdings Berhad Corporate Social Responsibility Tanggungjawab Sosial Korporat A CSR-CENTRIC LEGACY The evolution of FGV is rooted in one of the world’s most unique sustainable development initiatives – the creation of FELDA (Federal Land Development Authority) back in 1956. FELDA was established as a Malaysian government initiative to address rural poverty and empower the poor to contribute to the national economy. It would go on to become one of the world’s largest, most successful agricultural development projects, lifting over one million people out of subsistence livelihood, as well as giving birth to FGV – a billion Ringgit business with global footprints – and Felda Holdings Bhd (FHB) which emerged as the world’s largest palm oil producer, contributing eight percent of global palm oil production. In keeping with that legacy, today, it is estimated that FGV’s social footprint extends to almost two million people. This comprises not only 112,635 settler families including their children and grandchildren, people associated with the settlements and those living in rural towns and villages who derive their income from the Felda group but also many Malaysians: 60,000 FGV shareholders, 23,000 FELDA and FGV employees, 50,000 workers and thousands of vendors, suppliers, contractors and business partners together with their respective families. True to its founding mission, FGV continues to uphold sustainability principles in the pursuit of its goals and in the conduct of its business.
