ANNUAL INTEGRATED REPORT 2017 FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 149 NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE FINANCIAL YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2017 3 SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (CONTINUED) The principal accounting policies applied in the preparation of financial statements are set out below. These policies have been consistently applied to all the years presented, unless otherwise stated (continued) (g) Financial assets (continued) Subsequent measurement - gains and losses Available-for-sale financial assets and financial assets at fair value through profit or loss are subsequently carried at fair value. Loans and receivables are subsequently carried at amortised cost using the effective interest method. Changes in the fair values of financial assets at fair value through profit or loss, including the effects of currency translation, finance and dividend income are recognised in profit or loss in the period in which the changes arise. Changes in the fair value of available-for-sale financial assets are recognised in other comprehensive income, except for impairment losses (see accounting policy Note 3(h)) and foreign exchange gains and losses on monetary assets. The exchange differences on monetary assets are recognised in profit or loss, whereas exchange differences on non- monetary assets are recognised in other comprehensive income as part of fair value changes. Finance and dividend income on available-for-sale financial assets are recognised separately in profit or loss. Dividend income on available-for-sale financial assets are recognised in profit or loss when the Group’s right to receive payment is established. De-recognition Financial assets are de-recognised when the rights to receive cash flows from the investments have expired or have been transferred and the Group has transferred substantially all risks and rewards of ownership. Receivables that are factored out to banks and other financial institutions with recourse to the Group are not derecognised until the recourse period has expired and the risks and rewards of the receivables have been fully transferred. The corresponding cash received from the financial institutions is recorded as borrowings. When available-for-sale financial assets are sold, the accumulated fair value adjustments recognised in other comprehensive income are reclassified to profit or loss. Offsetting Financial assets and liabilities are offset and the net amount reported in the statement of financial position when there is a legally enforceable right to offset the recognised amounts and there is an intention to settle on a net basis, or realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously.
